Fancy doing something different this summer? Have you thought about teaching science at Summer Camps?
Science at camp isn’t all about textbooks and classrooms: it’s about experiments and learning something unique!
In today’s Guest Blog Post, Jess talks us through her summer as a STEM Manager at a Girl Guide Camp.
During my second year at camp, I was a STEM Manager. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and maths.
I have a Zoology degree and some experience teaching children different activities. It seemed like the perfect job for me!
It was the first summer that STEM became a full-time job at my camp, so I was lucky enough to be able to do whatever I wanted.
One of my favourite activities was DNA extraction. The look of horror when I asked the girls to gargle salt water never got old!
It was really cool to be able to go into some serious detail about DNA with the oldest girls. The younger ones had lots of wacky questions too.
Another of my favourite activities was owl pellet dissection. We only did this a few times, but it was so cool!
We pulled out the skulls and bones of animals that the owls had eaten and the campers loved it.
The girls even made up stories of how the owl ended up eating the various rodents.
A big perk of running STEM sessions was that I was able to meet and interact with all the girls on camp.
Each group of girls would come and see me at least once a week, and some every single day.
My summer as STEM manager was a lot of fun! I got a lot from it and it was nice to get to know the campers.
If you’re a bit hesitant about applying for camp as you’re not very sporty, there’s absolutely no need to worry!
A summer at camp is about so much more than just sport. There really is a job for everyone.
There are more than a hundred different skills you can get hired for at camp and lots of different activities.
