Not sure if working directly with campers at Summer Camp is for you? Is there an alternative to becoming a Camp Counselor? Summer Camps in America need a team working behind the scenes to make sure campers have the best summer possible. If you’re looking for an alternative to becoming a Camp Counselor, a Support Staff role is a great path to take. You could work in the kitchens, take a maintenance job, or get stuck into an office-based job. Everything’s covered! Today’s Guest Blogger, Becky Foxall, spent a summer working as Support Staff at Southampton Fresh Air Home.
I decided to take a Support Staff job because I’d never worked with children before and I wanted to ease myself into it. During the training week, all the staff were put into different bunks. I ended up in a bunk with a group of younger boys, and it couldn’t have suited me better. Being in the same bunk as the campers but working behind the scenes gave me the chance to ease myself into working with children – just what I wanted!
Camp can’t run without you because Support Staff really are the foundation of Summer Camp. Whatever your job behind the scenes, Support Staff are needed to make sure everyone has the most amazing summer of their lives. No kitchen staff? There’s going to be no food. No laundry staff? The bunks would be a mess. No office staff? None of the campers would actually make it to camp.
I spent my summer working in the camp’s kitchen, but I didn’t spend all my time there. A Support Staff job at Summer Camp doesn’t mean you won’t spend any time with the campers, because you definitely will. At mealtimes, I’d be busy making sure the campers and Camp Counselors had what they needed, and making sure campers with allergies weren’t eating food they shouldn’t be!
You’ll make life-long friendships at Summer Camp. When I was at camp, we spent so much time together in the kitchen bonding over silly mistakes. We spilled about 1kg of pancake mix all over ourselves… There are also some pretty fun perks that help make a job as Support Staff an alternative to becoming a camp counselor. If there was any dessert leftover, kitchen staff got seconds. It’d be a shame to waste it! You’ll end your day covered in flour, sauce, and whatever else is in the kitchen, but that’s all part of the fun!
