Counselor Week is one of the best weeks of Summer Camp. It’s your chance to meet the people you will be working with over the summer, learn the ropes and get ready for the amazing summer ahead. So, how can you get the most out of it? In today’s blog post, Guest Blogger Liv Sewell walks us through how to get the most out of Counselor Week.
This is one or two weeks before the campers officially arrive. It’s the perfect chance for you to get to learn more about camp. The week helps new staff learn more about their job for the summer and what the campers will be like. It’s also a great chance to get to grips with the new environment that comes with working in America. You’ll take part in camp activities and get to become a camper yourself! This is where you will learn new ice breakers and start to prepare for your activity sessions.
About halfway through camp, you’ll probably look back on Counselor Week and realize how useful it was. Working at Summer Camp quickly becomes very intense – in a good way – so you’ll rely on your training. You’ll learn new things while learning things about yourself. This is the week to jump into as much as you can! This is your chance to build relationships with your fellow camp counselors and build memories that will last a lifetime.
You might be tired from travelling, but try and push yourself to get involved as much as you can. You’ll help cement bonds and friendships right before the campers arrive. Looking back through my camp journal, my first three days constantly repeat ‘I feel like I’ve known them my whole life’. It sounds a bit corny, but it was true! A year on, some of those people are still really close to me. Camp and the kids are amazing and unforgettable, and you form solid lifelong friendships.
