How Flights to Summer Camp Work

Travelling can be stressful at the best of times, even if everything goes smoothly.

If you’ve not travelled long haul before, then you might be wondering how your flights to Summer Camp work.

Before you Arrive at the Airport

It’s really important that you’re super organized and you get everything ready at least the day before you’re due to fly to America. This will give you time to check and double check you’ve got everything you’ll need.

Most airlines give you a 23kg checked baggage allowance – though it’s best to check with your airline as the allowance can vary – and you’ll have a 10kg allowance for your hand luggage. Make sure you weigh your bags at home to help avoid those nasty overweight baggage charges.

You’ll need to be at the airport at least three hours before your flight, so make sure you’ve planned how you’re getting to the airport well in advance.

Checking In

If you asked USA Summer Camp to buy your flights, you’ll pick up your boarding pass at the check-in desk, and your flight itinerary can be found on your USA Summer Camp profile.

If you chose to book flights yourself, your airline will give you check-in instructions via email.

Airport Security

Depending on the time and day of your flight, getting through airport security can take up to an hour, but you can speed up the process by packing smart!

Make sure your liquids are in a clear plastic bag and are under 100ml each, and total less than 1L. Put them at the top of your bag for easy reach.

Flight Delays

Flight delays can happen to everyone. If your flight is delayed by over 90 minutes, you’ll need to let us know. You can contact our team on 0121 411 9165 or reach out to us on our social media.

You’ll also need to let camp know so they can help re-plan your onward travel from the airport to camp.

If you do have a flight delay, don’t stress! Regardless of the delay time, you’ll get to America.

Connecting Flights

Most people have a connecting flight.

To make connecting as easy as possible, ask your airline for as much info as possible about the connecting flight when you check-in.

There’s a chance that you’ll need to collect your luggage, take it through customs, and then re-check it for your connecting flight – but this isn’t the case for everyone.

If you miss a connecting flight due to a long wait in immigration, go to your airline’s customer service desk and tell them what has happened. They’ll set you up with a new flight!

Immigration

When you arrive in America, you’ll need to go through immigration.

Depending on how many flights arrive before you, the time to get through immigration can be around an hour long.

This is your chance to re-read your onward travel info – you’re probably going to be asked about it when you go through immigration. You’ll also have your photograph and fingerprints taken too.

You’ll need to have a few documents to hand as well. Documents you’ll need to have ready are:

  • Your passport
  • Your DS2019 form & SEVIS receipt
  • Customs declaration form (you’ll get this on the plane)
  • Camp Contract and itinerary
