What is a Special Needs Summer Camp?
A Special Needs Summer Camp offers children and adults with additional support needs the chance to enjoy the classic American summer camp experience in a fully inclusive environment. These camps are tailored for individuals with a wide range of physical, emotional, and learning disabilities and provide campers with the care, structure, and encouragement they need to thrive.
Camps are designed to be highly accessible, with adapted facilities, equipment, and programmes to ensure every camper is fully included in all aspects of camp life. Many of the campers return year after year thanks to the supportive environment and meaningful friendships they build.
Campers might be aged anywhere from 8 to 80, and the camps often serve as a welcome respite for both them and their families. Staff-to-camper ratios are typically much higher to provide the appropriate level of care and attention for each individual.

A Typical Day at a Special Needs Summer Camp

Every day at a Special Needs Summer Camp is different, but you’ll always be making a genuine difference. As a Camp Counsellor, Specialist Counsellor, or Support Staff, you might find yourself:
- Supporting campers one-on-one during daily routines and activity sessions
- Assisting with mobility, medication, meals, and personal care
- Leading or adapting activities like swimming, arts and crafts, music, and drama
- Creating a positive, safe and inclusive environment for everyone to take part
- Working closely with other counsellors and specialists as part of a close-knit team
Most activities focus less on competition and more on participation, fun, and confidence-building. You’ll help campers achieve their goals – whether it’s trying something new, building friendships, or simply having a great time in a supportive space.
