A Guide to US Summer Camps

A Guide to US Summer Camps

Looking to do something amazing with your summer? USA Summer Camp might be the perfect program for you! Every year, Camp directors in America are looking for adventurous, friendly and talented people from all over the world to work at their camps. It’s your chance to build your cv, make new friends and make memories you will never forget. If you’re interested in finding out more, this guide to US Summer Camps will tell you everything you need to know about working at a Camp in America!

What are US Summer Camps?

Every year in the US, children from all over the country get to spend 9 to 12 weeks of their summer at a Summer Camp. From Soccer and Rock Climbing to Arts and Crafts and Water Sports, campers get to have FUN and dive deep into a range of different activities which allows them to build their skills and confidence. This is where you come in! We work with over 700 US Summer Camps who are looking for people to make a difference next summer. With so many different types of camps available such as traditional, Girls Scouts, Specialist, Underprivileged and many more, there’s a perfect camp for everyone.

How Long Do Summer Camps Last?

Depending on your camp, you could be spending 9-12 jam-packed weeks working in the USA. Each US Summer Camp has different start dates, but most Camp Counselors will fly out between the Middle of May/June and stay until the end of August. Once camp ends, you also get 30 days to travel around the US! Is there really a better way to spend your summer!?

What are the Jobs Available at a US Summer Camp?

We have hundreds of different jobs available for you to choose from! Camps are looking for Camp Counselors, Activity Specialists and Support Staff to help in summer 2021. As a Camp Counselor, it is important to make sure the campers are having the best summer ever. You will take your campers around to activities, make sure they are safe, but most importantly having fun. The best part is you can get involved with the activities too! You can get paid to have fun and learn new skills as part of your cultural exchange in the US. Like we said, this really is the best summer job out there!

If you are interested in the Activity Specialist role, you can teach anything from Arts and Crafts, Photography, Basketball, Horse Riding and so much more. It’s your job to help the campers find their passions and build their confidence in your activity. To find out more about this role and the activities you can get involved with, click here.

If you prefer being behind the scenes, the Support Staff role might be perfect for you! Support Staff can be seen busy in the office or giving a helping hand in the kitchen at meal times. You can also help with laundry and maintenance too. These roles are very important in making sure camp runs smoothly and efficiently. Without the help of all these staff members, there would be no camp!

What Activities Can I Teach at Camp?

Within the weeks that the campers are at camp, US Summer Camps hold a variety of activities to keep the campers energised and busy. As an Activity Specialist, it will be up to you to lead and run these different sessions. For example, you can become a Swimming Teacher in the USA. As part of your duties, you will be expected to teach the campers different techniques such as Backstroke, Butterfly, and Freestyle, whilst also making sure the campers are safe and having fun.

Alternatively, Summer Camps also offer Performing Arts Job roles. As a Performing Arts Specialist, you lead the sessions and help to bring the campers out of their shells. Everyday is different and could involve vocal lessons, acting, dancing and so much more. You could also be in-charge of leading one of the biggest camp events, the camp theatre show!

If you are more sporty, there’s loads of coaching opportunities for you at Summer Camp too. Football Coaching is very popular and a role that camps hire for every year. You’ll focus on getting the campers confident on the field and learning new skills. From techniques like dribbling to control skills, everyday will be different!

With so many different activities available to teach at camp, there’s a perfect job for everyone in the US.  To find out more about the different activity job roles available, click here.

6 Emotions You’ll Feel on your First 4th of July

Here are 6 emotions you’ll feel on your first 4th of July!

It’s your first 4th of July in America and every American’s favourite day. It’s time to celebrate the land of the free and the home of the brave and boy are you in for a treat. Red, white and blue are everywhere and you feel like you are in a fresh tube of Colgate toothpaste. You never thought you’d feel so patriotic for a country you’re not from but here you are belting out the National Anthem like you didn’t just learn the words two weeks ago.

Independence Day is not just a film about Aliens on the 4th of July

1. Confusion

confusion about 4th of july

There is none stop chanting of “USA, USA, USA!”. Everyone is in red, white and blue. There are stars and stripes literately everywhere. You didn’t realise how patriotic everyone is until today. Everyone is running around waving flags and singing Katy Perry. Independence Day isn’t just a film about aliens? What?! You thought that the bonfire firework display at your local park was a show. Think again. This display is something to rival Londons New Years Eve show. Who knew independence meant bottomless chicken wings? Sign us up!

2. Food Coma

There is food EVERYWHERE. You’ve gotten accustomed to the food at camp by now including the mad portion sizes. However, you were not prepared for today! You never knew it was possible to arrange burgers and hotdogs into an American flag display but here we are. There are snacks on snacks on snacks and you are ready. The food coma is coming and you welcome it in waves.

3. Fear

fear of 4th of july

There is a lake with your name on it and you have the fear, bad. You’ve been hiding out all day trying to avoid getting thrown into the lake but tradition is tradition. The feeling of knowing that it is coming is the worst and you’re contemplating just throwing yourself in.

4. Patriotic

patriotic for 4th of july

You might not be American but today you are an honorary citizen. Everyone else’s buzz for the country has got you swept up in the celebrations and your singing Star Bangled Banner with the rest of them. Today, this land is your land and today this land is my land. Go America!

5. Excited

All your campers have got you absolutely fizzing with excitement. There are fun, games and food everywhere. The only holiday you have to compare is Christmas and this is the Christmas of summer. You’re ready to fly the flag and fly the flag HARD. Why can’t every day be the 4th of July?

6. Tired

It’s been a long old day and you are ready for bed. The whole day has been non-stop and although it’s been enjoyable you are worn out. Who knew Independence was so exhausting?! It’s time to kick your feet up, make a cup of tea and go back to business as usual tomorrow. You’re retiring the red, white and blue for Color War. Until next time Independence Day!
