The countdown has begun… you’re about to have the summer of your life! Working at Summer Camp in the USA is more than just a job — it’s the ultimate adventure, and getting prepared is part of the journey.

From passport checks to packing snacks, there are a few essentials to sort before you jet off. But don’t worry — we’ve pulled together everything you need to know so you’re fully prepped and ready to go.

The Essentials (Yes, the Boring Bit First)

Before the fun starts, you’ve got a few important things to tick off the list. It might not be the most exciting part, but it’s so important.

  • Make sure your USA Summer Camp profile is 100% complete.
  • Double-check all your documents have been uploaded and verified.
  • Take time to properly read your insurance information — boring, but essential.
  • Complete your Pre-Departure Orientation — it’s packed with tips, information, and everything you need to know about camp life.

The more you know, the smoother your arrival and start to camp will be.

Packing Like a Pro

Packing for camp isn’t quite like packing for a beach holiday — but it’s a lot more fun! Here’s what you actually need:

  • Comfy basics – Think t-shirts, shorts, vest tops, and breathable layers.
  • Camp classics – A head torch for nighttime toilet trips, a reusable water bottle, and a bum bag for daily essentials.
  • Footwear – Trust us, you’ll live in trainers and sliders.
  • British snacks – Digestives, Dairy Milk, or your weird favourite crisps — your co-counsellors will try to trade for them.
  • Theme night outfits – A Hawaiian shirt or some neon gear never goes amiss!

Forgot something? No stress — you can always stock up at Walmart once you arrive.

Health Check Before You Go

In the UK we’ve got the NHS, but in the US, healthcare is very different — and expensive. A pre-camp health check is a smart move.

  • Book a GP appointment to top up any prescriptions or check in with anything bothering you.
  • If you wear glasses or contact lenses, make sure you’ve got spares.
  • A quick dentist visit is also a good shout — you don’t want toothache on trip day.

Being in top shape will help you hit the ground running when you arrive at camp.

Sort Your Finances

Summer Camp is amazing, but sorting your money before you leave will make life a whole lot easier.

  • Tell your bank you’ll be in America, so your card doesn’t get frozen.
  • Check what direct debits and subscriptions will go out while you’re away (Spotify, gym, etc.).
  • If your phone contract isn’t roaming-friendly, look into a travel SIM or eSIM.
  • Set a budget for your post-camp travels — trust us, you’ll want one.

Camp might be cash-light (meals and accommodation are included!), but you’ll still want spending money for your days off and travel time.
