Hand Luggage Tips
So, your American summer adventure is just around the corner! Whether you’re counting down the days or double-checking your travel checklist, hand luggage is one area you definitely don’t want to overlook.
You’ve got one bag to carry your absolute essentials – the stuff you can’t afford to lose, the bits that’ll make your flight more fun, and everything you’ll need to breeze through US immigration like a pro.
We’ve created a handy list of what to pack in your hand luggage to keep you cool, calm, and camp-ready.
- Important documents
- Water bottle (empty!)

1. Important documents
Your documents are your passport (literally!) to an unforgettable summer, so they must go in your hand luggage – not your hold case.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Passport with your J1 Visa inside
- DS-2019 form & SEVIS receipt
- Customs declaration form (sometimes handed out on the plane)
- Your insurance details/card
- Camp contract and your camp’s contact info
- Any onward travel documents or transfer confirmations
Top Tip: Keep them in a plastic wallet or travel organiser and make sure they’re easily accessible for US immigration.
2. Water bottle (empty!)
Yes, it needs to be empty when you go through security – but once you’re airside, fill it up at a water station and save on airport prices.
It’ll also come in super handy at camp, especially on those hot, sunny activity days. Stay hydrated and keep that camp energy high!
3. A cosy hoodie
Flights can get chilly, and so can campfire nights. Pack a hoodie in your hand luggage that you can throw on during the flight or use as a pillow.
Bonus: You’ll look like a seasoned traveller and stay comfy at 30,000 feet.
4. Chargers & battery pack
Imagine landing in the US and having a flat phone… nightmare!
Make sure you have:
- Your phone charger
- A portable battery pack
- And don’t forget your charging cable (USB-C or Lightning!)
5. Things to do
You’re going to be in the air for 8+ hours, so boredom is your only enemy.
Here’s how to beat it:
- Download a few films or series to your phone or tablet
- Load up your Spotify playlist with summer vibes
- Bring a book, puzzle, or travel game
- Don’t forget your headphones (noise-cancelling if possible!)

6. Medication
If you take regular medication, keep it on you at all times.
Luggage can be delayed (or even lost), and replacing meds in the US can be very expensive – or worse, tricky without a prescription.
Make sure:
- You pack enough for your whole trip (plus a little extra)
- It’s in its original packaging
- You have a doctor’s note or prescription just in case
7. Spare clothes
If your suitcase goes AWOL, you’ll thank your past self for thinking ahead.
Pop a spare outfit and a fresh pair of underwear into your hand luggage. Even a change of socks can feel like luxury after a long flight!
Final tips
- Keep everything organised – zip pouches or travel organisers are a lifesaver
- Label your hand luggage with your name, contact info, and camp name
- Check your airline’s size and weight limits for hand luggage
- Don’t forget your power adapter (US plug = Type A/B)
