Everyone’s Summer Camp Packing List Should Include:
1. Important documents
Let’s start with the absolute must-haves. These documents are your golden ticket into the States and to your camp, so don’t leave them behind!
- Passport with your J-1 visa inside
- DS-2019 form & SEVIS receipt
- Your insurance card
- Camp contract and contact details
- Onward travel details from airport to camp
Top Tip: Keep all of these in a document wallet or plastic folder in your hand luggage. They’ll need to be accessible for border checks and your arrival at camp.
2. Summer camp clothes
Spoiler alert: you’re going to get messy – in the best possible way. Think paint, grass stains, sun cream spills, and glitter (lots of it). Don’t bring anything too precious!
Here’s what to pack:
- T-shirts
- Comfy shorts
- Athletic-style swimwear
- Hoodies and long-sleeve tops for cool evenings
- Leggings or joggers
- A lightweight raincoat
- A few nice outfits for your days off or post-camp travels
Budget Hack: Budget Hack: Hit up Primark for super cheap basics – cheap jogger shorts and tees are perfect camp staples! Once you’re Stateside, Walmart will become your new best friend.
3. Summer camp shoes
Your feet are going to work hard – so take care of them!
- A comfy, worn-in pair of trainers or running shoes
- Flip flops for the showers and pool
- Crocs – yes, we said it – for ultimate camp style and convenience
- A pair of sandals or casual shoes for your time off
Pro Tip: Break in your trainers before you go. Blisters on day one = no fun.
4. Fancy dress & spirit day essentials
If there’s one thing camp counsellors do well—it’s fancy dress! From Superhero Day to International Night, you’ll want to be ready to bring the energy.
Pack:
- A couple of fun fancy dress costumes (bonus points if they’re ridiculous)
- Small items that represent your home country – flags, photos, souvenirs, your favourite footie team’s shirt
- Colourful accessories – wigs, face paint, neon glasses – go wild!
Why it matters: Spirit Days help you connect with campers, show off your personality, and create unforgettable memories!
5. Summer camp toiletries
Keep it simple. Don’t weigh your bag down with full-size bottles – Walmart will come to the rescue once you’re in the US!
Pack travel-size essentials to get you through the first week or two, such as:
- Travel shampoo and conditioner
- Body wash
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher—non-negotiable!)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Razor and shaving supplies (if needed)
- Hairbrush or comb
- Sanitary products
- Basic first aid items (plasters, paracetamol, insect bite cream)
Packing Tip: Put your toiletries in a zip-lock or waterproof pouch to avoid spills in your luggage.
What NOT to pack
It’s easy to go overboard, especially when you’re excited – but trust us, less is more at camp!
Here are some things you really don’t need:
- Too many shoes – three pairs max: trainers, flip flops, and something for your time off
- Expensive tech – your phone is enough, and you won’t have much downtime anyway!
- Valuable jewellery or clothing – it will get messy
- Too many “going out” outfits – you’ll spend most of your time in shorts and a camp tee
- Duplicate toiletries – you can stock up at Walmart
- Your entire wardrobe – pack for function and comfort, not fashion
Golden Rule: If in doubt, leave it out! Space is limited in your cabin, and overpacking just makes it harder to stay organised.
Bonus tips to be camp-ready
Choose the right luggage
A large soft-sided suitcase or duffel bag with wheels is ideal—it’s easier to store under bunk beds. Bring a small backpack or day bag for day trips and your journey.
Pack some essentials for travel days
- Travel pillow
- Reusable water bottle
- Phone charger (and a US adapter plug)
- Earplugs or eye mask for the plane
- A good book or downloaded playlist for the journey
Don’t forget your personality!
Camp thrives on enthusiasm and big energy. Bring your openness, your sense of adventure, and your silliest side – you’re going to need them all!
