Get prepping and packing

Even if you haven’t been placed yet, start packing now! Placements can happen fast – some people are called up and asked to fly out the very next day.

Getting your suitcase sorted early will take a huge weight off your shoulders and let you focus on the excitement of what’s ahead.

A full body MOT

Health checks might not be the most glamorous part of camp prep, but they’re vital.

Here’s what to do:

  • Book a GP appointment: Double-check your vaccinations, refill prescriptions, and talk through any health concerns.
  • Visit the dentist: Avoid emergency dental bills by making sure everything’s in tip-top shape before you fly.
  • Sort your travel insurance: Make sure your policy covers you for the full length of your trip, including camp and any travel afterwards.

Get your hair done

Want that fresh-summer-feeling as you arrive at camp? Whether it’s a trim, a new colour, or just a tidy-up, getting your hair sorted before you fly means one less thing to worry about once you’re stateside.

It’s all part of the prep that helps you feel your confident best as you kick off the experience of a lifetime.

Finances – sorted!

Make sure your money’s ready to travel with you.

  • Tell your bank you’ll be in the US so they don’t freeze your card.
  • Choose how you’ll access cash – some go for prepaid travel cards, others bring US dollars in cash.
  • Download your bank’s app for easy top-ups or currency conversions.

Pro Tip: Always carry a small amount of USD for your arrival day – you might need it for snacks, transport or tipping at the airport.

Documents you can’t forget

You’re going nowhere without these – so check and double-check before you leave:

Must-haves:

  • Passport (with your J1 visa inside)
  • DS-2019 form and SEVIS receipt
  • Travel insurance card
  • Camp contract and camp contact details
  • Flight info
  • Onward travel plan (airport to camp)
  • Copies of all the above – printed AND digital

Packing Tip: Keep everything in a clear wallet or folder in your carry-on. You’ll thank yourself at the border!

Don’t forget the little things

They’re small, but they can make or break your first few days in the USA!

Essentials to pack in your carry-on:

  • US power adapter – the sockets are different, and your devices will thank you
  • Portable phone charger – essential for airport delays and long journeys
  • Reusable water bottle – save money and stay hydrated
  • Sunglasses and a hat – protect yourself from that glorious camp sunshine
  • Travel pillow and eye mask – for the long flight and any layovers
  • A notebook or journal – perfect for capturing first impressions and memories
  • Comfort snacks – handy for flights, delays or your first night at camp

Bonus Tip: Stick a mini first-aid kit in your bag with plasters, paracetamol, and antihistamines – just in case!

Final countdown – Things to tick off

You’re nearly there – here’s your final set of “don’t forgets” to make sure you step on that plane completely calm and camp-ready:

  • Let your bank know you’re travelling to the US to avoid card blocks
  • Back up your phone/photos to the cloud and clear some space
  • Download offline maps (Google Maps lets you download areas!)
  • Message your camp if you haven’t already to say you’re looking forward to arriving
  • Set up your US roaming plan (or check if your phone will work with a US SIM)
  • Get a good night’s sleep before your flight (as excited as you are!)
  • Say your goodbyes, pack your bags, and get ready for the best summer ever!
