Things every summer camp counsellor learns
Real Lessons. Real Growth. Real Adventure.
Ask any returning Camp Counsellor and they’ll tell you—working at a USA Summer Camp will teach you more in one summer than any classroom, job, or textbook ever could. Whether it’s learning about yourself, discovering new life skills, or simply figuring out how to thrive in a totally new environment, camp is the ultimate crash course in life.
Our guest blogger Hannah, a Specialist Counsellor at Camp Towanda, shares what every camp counsellor learns along the way. From sunburns to self-discovery, here’s what’s waiting for you…

1. Nerves don’t matter
Before I went to camp, I was so nervous. At 25, I thought I’d be the oldest one there and didn’t know if I’d fit in. Spoiler: I absolutely did. Everyone at camp is there for the same reason – to have fun, make an impact, and experience something unforgettable. You’ll meet open-minded, kind-hearted people from all over the world – and the nerves? They’ll be gone by Day Two.
2. Wear sunscreen (seriously)
Sounds basic, right? But trust me – you’ll forget. Between the excitement of Day One and the never-ending sunshine, that first burn sneaks up fast. You’ll be reminding your campers to apply it, but don’t forget yourself. Walmart is your new best friend – stock up and slather it on. Your skin (and your mood) will thank you.
3. Don’t pack the kitchen sink
You don’t need to bring your entire life with you. Really. The essentials (like toothpaste, shampoo, towels, even flip-flops) can all be bought in the US. Travel light, save your suitcase space, and keep it simple. You’ll probably spend most of the summer in shorts and a T-shirt anyway!
4. Love isn’t everything
Camp romances? They happen. But here’s the real truth: you’re not there to find “the one” – you’re there for the experience, the kids, the memories, and the growth. Focus on the friendships, the laughs, and the moments that matter. The best relationships you’ll form are the ones you never expected – with campers, co-counsellors, and your future best friends.
5. Sleep when you can
Camp life is high-energy, fast-paced, and full of adventure – which is exactly why rest is your secret weapon. Jet lag at the start is real, and once the campers arrive, your downtime will be precious. Don’t let FOMO keep you from recharging when you need it. You’ll thank yourself during Colour War week!
Final lesson: You’ll never be the same
Working at Summer Camp changes you. You’ll grow in confidence, find your voice, gain leadership skills, and become someone you’re proud of. Whether it’s your first job away from home or you’ve already clocked a few years of work experience – camp stretches you in ways no office job can.
