What is a Day Camp?
Day Camps offer the full summer camp experience during the day, then send campers home to their families at night. Whether you’re a first-time camp counsellor or a seasoned camper, Day Camps provide a fast-paced, rewarding and fun-filled environment to spend your summer.
A Day Camp works slightly differently to traditional residential camps – mainly because the campers don’t stay overnight. Instead, they’re picked up in the morning (usually in those iconic yellow school buses!) and head home each afternoon.
Day Camps offer local children the chance to spend their summer holidays outdoors, developing new skills, playing games, and taking part in loads of exciting activities. They typically run Monday to Friday, meaning weekends off for you to explore or relax.
Even though campers leave at the end of each day, Day Camps still pack in a full camp experience, with activities like arts & crafts, swimming, sports, nature adventures, talent shows and team games.
What Skills Do I Need?
Day Camps need enthusiastic, high-energy people who love working with kids. You’ll need to be:
- Organised: With so many activities and tight schedules, being on the ball is a must.
- Patient: Campers are full of energy and questions – you’ll need to be cool under pressure.
- Communicative: You’ll be interacting with campers, fellow staff, and sometimes parents too.
- Flexible: No day at camp goes exactly as planned. Be ready to adapt and think on your feet.
- Supportive: Most of all, you need to be someone who helps campers grow, learn, and shine.

A Typical Day at a Day Camp

From the moment those buses roll in, you’ll hit the ground running. Campers will be full of energy and excited to get stuck into the day.
As a Camp Counsellor, you’ll be leading groups from one activity to another, keeping spirits high and ensuring everyone’s included and having a blast.
The schedule is usually packed, so expect the days to fly by. You’ll be guiding, encouraging, problem-solving, and generally being a huge part of making the summer unforgettable for every camper.
Day Camps often hold special events too – think camp-wide games, performances, or themed dress-up days – so no two days are quite the same!
Evenings & Time Off
Because the campers leave in the afternoon, your evenings are typically your own! Some camps or host families organise social activities, BBQs or trips out, while others leave you free to chill, go shopping, hit the beach or explore the area with your fellow staff.
This extra downtime is one of the biggest perks of working at a Day Camp, and you’ll still get to bond closely with the rest of your camp team and make lifelong friendships.
Is This the Right Camp for You?
If you want to enjoy all the classic elements of summer camp without living with campers 24/7, Day Camps offer the perfect balance of structure and freedom. It’s an ideal role for people who are excited to work hard, make a difference, and still have time in the evenings to enjoy their American summer adventure.
Whether you’re leading a craft project, organising a relay race, or singing silly songs, you’ll be creating memories that last a lifetime – for both you and your campers.
