Parks and gardens

Frederik Meijer Gardens, Michigan
Hidden in Grand Rapids, the Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park is a mix of art, nature and adventure. With over 158 acres of botanical beauty and more than 200 sculptures, it’s an inspiring place to unwind, explore and snap some fantastic photos. Concerts are held regularly on its grassy banks, so check out the events calendar—this is a great spot to picnic and soak up local culture.
The High Line, New York City
This elevated urban park is built on an old freight rail line and offers a unique perspective of Manhattan. With a stunning blend of native plants, interactive art installations, performances and yoga classes, the High Line is a celebration of urban renewal and creativity. Plus, it’s completely free and one of the coolest ways to see NYC.
Museums, landmarks & history

Griffith Observatory, California
Get closer to the stars—literally—at this free public observatory in Los Angeles. You’ll find jaw-dropping views over the city, the Hollywood sign, and the galaxy beyond through its telescopes. Visit at night to see the skies come alive, or check out the exhibitions and planetarium shows during the day.
The Capitol Building, Washington DC
One of the most powerful buildings in the world, the Capitol is a symbol of democracy—and well worth a visit. Take a tour to learn about its dramatic history and stunning architecture. Entry to the Visitor Center is free, but book in advance to skip the queues.
Ellis Island, New York
Step into history at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. This moving experience highlights the stories of immigrants who came to the US in search of a better life. Catch a ferry from Battery Park to visit both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty—an unforgettable combo.
Mall of America, Minnesota
A mall… with a theme park and an aquarium? Welcome to the Mall of America. It’s bigger than you could ever imagine, with over 520 stores, Nickelodeon Universe rides, and even shark snorkelling experiences inside the Sea Life aquarium. There’s tax-free shopping on clothes in Minnesota too, so go wild! It’s the ultimate entertainment-shopping hybrid.
Universities
Harvard University, Boston
Stroll the same red-brick paths as US presidents and Nobel Prize winners at Harvard. Join a free student-led tour or explore Harvard Yard on your own. Be sure to stop by the John Harvard statue—legend says rubbing his foot brings good luck! (And yes, Legally Blonde was filmed here…)
Events and fairs
State Fairs
Think of the biggest fair you’ve ever been to—then multiply it by ten. State Fairs are an American tradition and happen all summer across every state. Expect carnival rides, farm animals, wild food (deep-fried everything!), concerts, competitions, and cultural showcases. If you spot one nearby—don’t miss it!
Festivals, food & music
America’s cultural identity is deeply tied to music, street food, and celebration. Some other not-to-miss hotspots include:
- New Orleans, Louisiana – for jazz, Creole cuisine, and Mardi Gras magic.
 - Austin, Texas – dubbed the Live Music Capital of the World, perfect for indie gigs and BBQ feasts.
 - Chicago, Illinois – with food festivals like Taste of Chicago and incredible architecture tours.
 - San Francisco, California – for street parades, world-class museums, and a vibrant LGBTQ+ scene.
