Summer Camp Salaries Explained: How Much Will I Actually Earn? 💵🇺🇸
One of the biggest questions we get asked is:
“How much do you get paid at summer camp?”
And it’s a good question!
The answer is slightly different from a normal summer job because working at a summer camp in America isn’t quite the same as working a summer job back home.
So, let’s talk dollars. 💵

First things first: your camp salary isn’t just your spending money
When you head to summer camp, you’re not earning a wage and then having to find somewhere to live, buy groceries every week and pay household bills.
Your food and accommodation at camp are provided, meaning your camp wage is essentially money you’re left with to enjoy.
Think of it as your summer pocket money.
Use it for those all-important Walmart trips, days off, eating out, buying camp merch or save it towards travelling around America after camp.
And trust us, that post-camp road trip hits differently when you’ve already got dollars in your account. 🇺🇸
So, how much does USA Summer Camp pay?
For the 2027 season, USA Summer Camp offers a minimum camp wage of $2,400.
And that’s the minimum.
Different camps offer different salaries, and some participants can earn considerably more depending on factors such as:
- Your job or activity role
- Your age
- Your skills and qualifications
- How long you’re working at camp
- The camp you’re placed at
Some camp positions can pay up to $5,000 for the summer.
Not bad when your accommodation and meals at camp are already taken care of!
Why does USA Summer Camp pay more?
Simple.
We think you should keep as much of your camp wage as possible.
USA Summer Camp has always prided itself on offering participants some of the highest camp wages available.
We’re transparent about what you’ll receive before you head to America, and we work hard to make sure our participants get a great deal.
For the 2027 season, our minimum is:
🇺🇸 USA Summer Camp — $2,400 minimum
To put that into perspective, based on the published rates we’ve compared for the 2027 season:
Camp America
- Age 18: $1,900
- Age 19–20: $2,000
- Age 21+: $2,150
AmeriCamp — $2,250
Camp Leaders — $2,250
That means even USA Summer Camp’s minimum $2,400 wage is higher than these comparable starting amounts.
And remember — depending on your camp and role, you could earn even more.
Competitor wage figures are based on rates available for the 2027 season at the time of writing and may be subject to change. Always check individual programme terms and eligibility when comparing providers.
Wait… so could I come home with $4,000?
Potentially, yes — but we’d rather be realistic than promise everyone they’ll earn the maximum.
Your final salary depends on your placement.
Some camps pay more for particular skills and positions. Some need staff for longer periods. Some may offer higher wages based on age or experience.
That’s why we advertise $2,400 as our minimum, rather than shouting about a maximum figure that won’t apply to everyone.
If you secure one of those higher-paying roles, though?
Happy days. 💰
What will I actually need to spend money on at camp?
Probably less than you think.
While you’re at camp, the big everyday expenses are taken care of.
You aren’t paying rent.
You aren’t doing a weekly food shop.
You aren’t paying electricity, gas or Wi-Fi bills.
Your accommodation and meals at camp are provided, so what you spend really comes down to you.
You might want money for days off, restaurants, shopping, snacks, activities or the occasional completely unnecessary American purchase that somehow seemed like a brilliant idea at the time.
We’ve all been there.
Don’t choose a summer camp programme on salary alone
We obviously think getting paid properly matters.
But there’s a bigger picture.
You’re spending your summer in America, making friends from around the world, gaining work experience, living at camp and potentially travelling around the USA afterwards.
For most people who go to camp, the stories they come home with end up being worth far more than the dollars.
But hey, getting paid more while you’re doing it certainly doesn’t hurt. 😉
More summer. More memories. More dollars.
USA Summer Camp has been sending participants to America since 2007, and we believe in giving our participants a great experience and a great deal.
That’s why for 2027 we’re offering a minimum camp wage of $2,400, with opportunities at some camps to earn considerably more.
