This year, USA Summer Camp turns 20.

It’s a milestone we’re incredibly proud of — not simply because we’ve been around for two decades, but because of everything that’s happened along the way.

USA Summer Camp was founded in 2007 with just two people who loved summer camp. They had experienced summer camp themselves and wanted to help more young people work at summer camps across America.

Working at an underprivileged camp in Duxbury, near Boston, they’d experienced first-hand just how special a summer at camp could be. The friendships. The travel. The confidence. The memories. And they wanted to give more young people the opportunity to experience it for themselves.

That simple idea became USA Summer Camp.

From two people to 20 years of summer

A lot has changed since 2007.

Social media barely existed. Smartphones weren’t in everyone’s pockets. TikTok certainly wasn’t a thing.

But one thing hasn’t changed: the magic of summer camp.

For 20 years, we’ve helped young people take that huge step of travelling across the Atlantic and spending their summer working at camps throughout the USA.

For some, it’s their first time travelling alone.

For others, it’s their first time in America.

And for many, what starts as “one summer at camp” becomes one of the most important experiences of their lives.

We’ve watched participants make lifelong friendships, travel across America, return to camp year after year and, in some cases, build careers and relationships that started with that very first summer.

That’s what makes reaching 20 years particularly special to us.

USA Summer Camp started its first summer with 65 first time applicants going to Summer Camp. Now we send over 1,500 amazing people to camp. We added Return Staff in our second summer which has gone from strength to strength. Trusted by over 700 American Summer Camps who have worked with us over these 20 years.

More than just a summer

Ask someone who’s been to summer camp about their experience and you’ll quickly realise it’s difficult to explain until you’ve done it yourself.

Yes, you get to work in America.

Yes, you can travel afterwards.

But camp is about much more than that.

It’s about arriving somewhere knowing almost nobody and leaving with friends from around the world.

It’s about becoming more independent.

It’s about doing things you didn’t think you’d be able to do.

It’s about ridiculous camp traditions, nights around the campfire, days by the lake and stories you’ll still be telling years later.

That’s why we still love summer camp 20 years after USA Summer Camp began.

And we’re only getting started…

Twenty years is a chance to look back — but we’re even more excited about what’s ahead.
